All you have to do is immerse the egg in a pot of cold water. If it’s fresh, it will sink to the bottom and stay there flush. If it floats to the top, it’s not fresh. Go buy a new carton! This advice was first imparted to the public by food writer Hannah Glass in the 18th century. It still stands true to this day.

When it comes to wondering whether you’re buying organic eggs in the first place, the label should clearly state “organic.” However, it can be confusing to face all those options at the grocery store, which is why you should know a little background. Conventional eggs are overwhelmingly common when you peruse the egg aisle at the supermarket. However, they’re not organic.
